In the “April Showers”, Wharton focuses on Theodora, a protagonist who always wanted to become a writer so that she can financially support her family. However, the struggles is that not only is her family against her spending time writing but also Theodora hears her uncle James insulting a successful female author, Kathleen Kyd. Edith Wharton heightens stereotypical emotions of women as seen by the happiness and disappointment in “April Showers”. After Theodora, the teen writer, receives her acceptance from letter from The Home Circle Wharton writes, “In her own heart hundreds of germinating hopes had burst into sudden leaf” (Wharton 543).
