Ben Wright
Only found out yesterday that Ben Wright died. He often did commentary on the tour in Australia when I was growing up, and I always enjoyed his commentary. He had great insight into the game, knew its history, and he captured the drama and significance of events unfolding on the golf course with an economy and erudition few could match. Speaking of Ben Wright in another thread...made me wonder. It has been quite some time since he made the sexist comments (which were entirely overblown in our PC society anyway). Being how the TV landscape has changed in the last 10 years, isn't it almost hard to believe that a cable outlet (Golf... Ben Wright was a master at that, he could set the mood for a shot then go silent while the player hit it. Not sure when the announcers on the PGA Tour gave up on that level of professionalism, but its gone, and I find it grating at times. Very obscure reference but Bill Mehlhorn does it to a T here, and Ben Hogan said he was the best player from tee to green he ever saw. On another note, Hogan said Mickey Wright had the best swing and she also brought her arms down with patient hips more than anyone. Funny how the two best Hogan ever saw brought the arms down. In the off season, the Harry and George Wright (the greatest player of the time) performed many duties for Spalding, including acting as Sales Managers for the company. ( I have a great Spalding owned bicycle company invoice signed by Harry Wright about a week before he died in 1895 - probably his last known autograph actually).
