Olona
The Olona (Olona in Italian; Ulona, [1] Urona or Uòna [2] in Western Lombard) is an Italian river belonging to the Po Basin, 71 kilometres (44 mi) long, [3] [4] [5] that runs through the Province of Varese and Metropolitan City of Milan whose course is developed entirely in Lombardy. Olonā is endemic to Hawai’i and a part of the nettle family, Urticaceae. Typical to many Hawaiian plants, the olonā does not have stinging hairs like its mainland cousins. Olonā typically flowers between May and December, with female flowers becoming fleshy orange berry-like aceens and male flowers being white. Identification-- Olona, Touchardia latifolia, is a wood shrub endemic to Hawaii. Though it is a member of the Urticaceae, stinging nettle family, olona is free of stinging hairs. The plant is characterized by its prominent stipules, which are two to three inches long. First among the Hawaiians’ cordage resources, however, was an endemic forest plant, olonā. Its excellence made olonā cordage a highly valued item, not only among the Hawaiians themselves but also, later, among Western sailors, and its virtues enabled Hawaiians to create some of the finest pre-contact handcraft in the Pacific.
